A Mother’s Journey to Independence, Balancing Family and Business

Sonam Yangki, a 37-year-old housewife and mother from Changbangdu, Thimphu, is a shining example of determination and entrepreneurial spirit. In 2015, she founded the Morning Sun Group in Chargharey, Samtse, with a mission to promote sustainable agriculture by transforming local raw materials into high-quality products.

As the marketplace increasingly values unique, locally-made products crafted with care, businesses like the Morning Sun Group are thriving. However, the path to success is not without its challenges. Sonam and her team encountered obstacles in production and marketing but found that choosing the right location was vital for long-term success. After thorough research, they settled in the southern region of Bhutan, where an abundance of raw materials was readily available.

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman and a mother of a special child presented another significant challenge, particularly in terms of time management. Sonam candidly shared her experience, stating, “Balancing my responsibilities between the office and caring for my child was a massive challenge. The initial stages demanded an intricate juggling act between personal and professional commitments.” Nevertheless, with unwavering support from her family, friends, and husband, she overcame these obstacles, and the business is now on a path to success.

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, her key motivation has always been her child and husband. Her husband serves as a constant source of guidance and advice, reinforcing her determination. She explained, “To support my family financially and meet my needs, I have had to go the extra mile and make sacrifices to succeed in my business.”

Today, the Morning Sun Group produces a diverse range of products, including pickles, chips, shopping bags, local turmeric, and tea. Bhutanese people have a deep affection for pickles, and Sonam Yangki’s creations are more than just condiments; they are a cherished tradition. She expertly transforms fresh cucumbers, carrots, and other vegetables into mouthwatering pickles that not only tantalize taste buds but also support local farmers.

Her eco-friendly shopping bags are not only practical but also beautiful expressions of creativity, reflecting her commitment to sustainability alongside style. Additionally, Sonam Yangki’s locally sourced turmeric and tea have gained renown for their health benefits, providing consumers with fresher flavors while promoting sustainable agriculture practices within the community.

In addition to her business endeavors, Sonam Yangki authored a book titled “The Morning Sun” in 2015, co-authored with Monu Tamang. This inspirational book shares her personal journey as a mother of a special child, offering encouragement to others facing similar challenges.
