In 2018, The Royal Government of Bhutan unfurled the doors to its inaugural startup center, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s entrepreneurial landscape. With steadfast support from the Government of India, this center emerged not just as a physical space but as a catalyst for innovation, incubating dreams, and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.
At the Changzamtog, Thimphu, this hub is a commitment to providing affordable incubation spaces and delivering essential business development services. From mentorship programs to capacity-building training, the center has become a nucleus for aspiring entrepreneurs to nurture their ideas. Vibrant events for product launches add a dynamic touch, ensuring that the spirit of innovation is not just encouraged but celebrated.
Today, the Startup Centre stands as a testament to Bhutan’s entrepreneurial spirit, housing 36 incubatees, a diverse collective of 23 male and 13 female entrepreneurs. These visionaries are crafting a myriad of enterprises with high-growth potential – from cultural souvenirs, bags, and chocolates to artwork, herbal products, food items, candles, and cutting-edge software applications.
However, as the appetite for entrepreneurship among Bhutan’s residents intensifies, a single center proves insufficient to satiate the growing demand for startup support. Recognizing this need, the government took bold strides, establishing an additional startup hub in Dhamdum, Samtse. Concurrently, the 12th Five-Year Plan witnessed the meticulous renovation and remodeling of old service centers at Changzamtog, underlining the government’s unwavering commitment to providing a conducive environment for innovative ideas to flourish.
This isn’t just about physical spaces; it’s about laying the foundation for dreams to take flight. The Startup Centre isn’t just a place; it’s a community, a thriving ecosystem where innovation and creativity converge. As Bhutan’s entrepreneurial landscape evolves, these hubs are the epicenter of a transformative narrative, shaping the future of business and creativity in the country. The journey has just begun, and the stars of Bhutan’s startup scene are ready to shine.
