Once in a while, a young visionary emerges who is determined to make a positive impact in the country. Tshering Lhamo, a 24-year-old entrepreneur from Mothithang, Thimphu, is one such individual. Inspired by her educational background in Environmental Management, Tshering embarked on a journey to create a platform that would promote sustainability through research, advocacy, and innovative technologies. Thus, Gross International Nature (GIN) was born.
Formally introduced in 2020 at Changzamtog’s Startup, GIN has become a beacon of hope for environmental enthusiasts in Bhutan. Tshering’s deep concern for the environment, coupled with her entrepreneurial spirit, led her to establish GIN as a youth-led initiative that champions environmental research, advocacy, and sustainable technologies.
Recognizing the need for expertise in recycling, GIN sought collaboration with Europe’s recycling industry to bring their knowledge and experience to Bhutan. Alongside their research and advocacy services, GIN introduced UR (Useful Recycled) bricks, a recycling business that aims to provide sustainable alternatives for construction materials in the country.
Like any new venture, GIN faced numerous challenges in the competitive world of entrepreneurship. One major obstacle was the lack of knowledge and experience in the relevant field. Additionally, acquiring financial support to ensure the smooth operation of the organization proved to be a hurdle. However, with the guidance of mentors and valuable feedback, Tshering and her team overcame these challenges. Attending workshops and actively learning about business strategies allowed them to make informed decisions and secure funding through competitions and grants.
As an entrepreneur with multiple responsibilities, effective time management becomes crucial. Tshering emphasized the importance of prioritization and setting deadlines. By delegating specific tasks to qualified team members, she can focus on priority work while maintaining a well-structured approach.
Maintaining strong relationships with investors, partners, and stakeholders is vital for GIN’s growth and outreach. Tshering places great emphasis on open communication, providing frequent updates, and addressing issues promptly. Through face-to-face interactions and networking events, she actively nurtures solid relationships, building trust and fostering collaboration.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Tshering offers valuable advice: be willing to take risks, work diligently, and remain humble. Thorough market analysis, assessing potential customer bases, competitive advantages, feasibility, and financial viability are essential steps in deciding whether to pursue an opportunity.
Tshering Lhamo’s passion for environmental sustainability and her drive to create positive change have paved the way for Gross International Nature (GIN) to flourish. Through research, advocacy, and the introduction of innovative recycling initiatives, GIN stands as a shining example of how young entrepreneurs can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
As Bhutan and the world face pressing environmental challenges, Tshering’s vision and determination continue to inspire others to follow in her footsteps. With Gross International Nature leading the way, the path towards a more sustainable future becomes clearer, offering hope and inspiration for generations to come.
