The Government has allocated Nu 229.85 million in the current fiscal year (2024–2025) to support Bhutan’s creative industry, marking a transformative opportunity for content creators, filmmakers, and digital media startups.
This major investment aims to empower YouTubers, TikTokers, and Instagram creators by targeting the development of 100 YouTube channels with over 100,000 subscribers, boosting Bhutanese content visibility globally, supporting content production both locally and internationally, and establishing social media hubs in all 20 Dzongkhags to give rural creators a platform and voice.
The initiative also includes support for the production of four films and one OTT series in collaboration with international producers, directors, and screenwriters, with the goal of creating over 400 OTT-related jobs and preparing Bhutanese content for global streaming platforms.
Additionally, over 1,000 individuals will be trained and upskilled in specialized areas such as VFX, screenwriting, sound design, acting, voice dubbing, and color grading to build local expertise and reduce reliance on foreign training.
To further strengthen the film sector, Nu 200 million has been set aside under the ESP concessional loan scheme, allowing filmmakers to access up to Nu 10 million per project. Altogether, the initiative is expected to unlock monetization opportunities, enhance professional development, and position Bhutan’s creative talents on world-class platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and regional OTTs.
