Lekey Dorji : Finance Minister

Lekey Dorji became Bhutan’s Finance Minister upon being conferred the title of Dakyen by His Majesty The Druk Gyalpo on January 28, 2024. He serves as a Governor on the Governing Councils of the World Bank Group, Asian Development Bank, and SAARC Development Fund.

He has extensive experience as a civil servant, corporate executive, private entrepreneur, and startup investor. After leaving Bhutan Telecom, he was the first startup investor who used Ku-band satellite to bring down the price of Internet in Bhutan. He was also the consultant to start Bhutan’s first private cellular mobile company and bring about a duopoly in the telecom market in Bhutan.

Having worked as a consultant to the World Bank, ADB, JICA, Ramboll, Padeco, and Maxwell Stamp, he has acquired good international exposure and experience.

When Bhutan first went to the polls in 2008, he ventured into politics but it was only during 2013-18, that he was elected the Member of Parliament representing the Bardo-Trong constituency of Zhemgang and as the Minister of the erstwhile Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Academically strong all through schools and colleges, he holds a BSc in electrical engineering and an MSc in operational telecommunications as a Fulbright and International Telecommunication Union fellow from universities in the US and UK respectively. He is also a recipient of a prestigious presidential fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He describes himself as a patriot, pragmatic Buddhist, Kansas Jayhawk, DeSuup, thinker, a poor talker but a serious doer, and a team player who zealously guards integrity. He believes that a single individual at any level can make a difference and affect a positive change to create a better world.
