Santa Bir Biswa, a 38-year-old entrepreneur from Gosarling, Tsirang, has built a thriving IT services business from humble beginnings. As the founder of Sunrise Computer Technology, Santa’s journey is a testament to determination, resilience, and innovation in Bhutan’s growing private sector.
Having started his business in 2014 with just Nu. 80,000, Santa now offers a range of IT services across Bhutan, including network installations, heavy-duty printer repairs, laptop maintenance, CCTV setups, and video conferencing systems. He attributes his success to years of hard work and an entrepreneurial mindset.
Santa, a diploma holder in Information Technology, began his career as an IT technician through Grantee Employment Program (GEP) under the Ministry of Labor. He said, he was assigned to one of the private company. His job allowed him to work alongside foreign experts, giving him valuable hands-on experience. “I learned so much from the technical experts I worked with, which inspired me to start my own business,” he shared.
Encouraged by a senior engineer, Santa took the bold step to start Sunrise Computer Technology, despite limited resources. “Starting a business was a significant achievement, but maintaining and growing it is the real challenge,” he said.
Over the past decade, Sunrise Computer Technology has established itself as a reliable service provider for offices, institutions, and private clients across Bhutan. Santa’s business specializes in network establishment and maintenance, CCTV installation, repair and maintenance of heavy-duty printers, laptops, copiers, and other office equipment, and video conferencing systems.
Santa’s work has taken him to almost every Dzongkhag, where he has maintained and repaired IT equipment for government offices, businesses, and individuals. “I believe in providing reliable and timely services. My goal is to build trust and long-term relationships with my clients,” he said.
Running a business in Bhutan’s evolving IT sector has its challenges. Santa notes that competition and
limited clientele are the most significant hurdles. “The market is becoming more competitive, and the
pool of customers is small,” he explained. Despite this, Santa remains optimistic about the future. “Competition pushes us to innovate and improve our services.” Santa emphasizes the importance of consistency and adaptability. “Every challenge is a learning opportunity. Staying focused and delivering quality work is key,” he said.
Santa credits his success to a strong entrepreneurial mindset and offers valuable advice for aspiring business owners. “Education is crucial. Whatever you start, make sure you have the knowledge and skills to succeed,” he said. He also stressed the importance of persistence. “Never give up, even when things seem tough. With determination and hard work, success will come.” For new entrepreneurs, Santa recommends thorough research on their chosen industry. “Understand your market, products, services, and competitors. Preparation is the foundation for long-term success,” he advised.
As Sunrise Computer Technology continues to grow, Santa plans to expand his services to include advanced IT solutions such as cloud computing and cybersecurity. “These are areas where businesses in Bhutan will need support as they modernize,” he said. Santa is also passionate about mentoring young entrepreneurs. “I want to share my experiences and inspire others to take the leap into entrepreneurship. Bhutan needs more entrepreneurs to drive economic growth,” he said.
