From Bartsham, Trashigang, Bhutan, a Remarkable Entrepreneur Shares Her Journey
Melam Zangmo, a 27-year-old entrepreneur hailing from Bartsham, Trashigang, has carved a remarkable niche for herself in the world of entrepreneurship. Her venture, Kith-Tshel Garden, established in 2021, has become a symbol of her passion for plants and her unwavering dedication to both her business and social responsibility.
“My journey began with a deep love for nature, which I transformed into a flourishing business,” Melam proudly stated.
Instead of pursuing a conventional job after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies from Sherubtse College, Melam decided to tread the entrepreneurial path in pursuit of self-sufficiency. She conducted extensive market research and identified a burgeoning demand for plants, which laid the foundation for her bold foray into the floral business.
“Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint-hearted; you have to face numerous hurdles and overcome them simultaneously,” Melam emphasized.
Like many ventures, Kith-Tshel Garden encountered its share of challenges and emotional setbacks. Melam candidly shared,
“Initially, my biggest problem was obtaining financial support. The flower business may not require high technology, but it demands careful nurturing, which raised concerns about profitability and securing funding.”
However, her determination led her to seek assistance from DHI BIZAP, enabling her to kickstart her business in 2021. She also had the opportunity to participate in the Springboard Plus Program 2023, co-led by UNDP, MOICE, and Loden Foundation, which further bolstered her entrepreneurial journey.
“While my journey in the entrepreneurial world is relatively young and still evolving, I understand that challenges lie ahead. But, as the saying goes, ‘if there is a will, there is a way,’ and we will not lose hope,” Melam affirmed.
Melam drew inspiration from her personal motto, “Work until you no longer need to introduce yourself.” Mr. Rikesh from Green Road played a pivotal role in her entrepreneurial journey, offering guidance and helping her network with various customers.
“My family’s unwavering support and my dedicated team sharing the same vision are the pillars that keep me going when facing setbacks,” Melam shared.
She stressed that determination requires sacrifices, including meals, sleep, and family time, but the ultimate goal makes these sacrifices worthwhile.
“Even with a proper plan, there’s no guarantee of success. Seek suggestions, opinions, and feedback from customers and families for continuous improvement,” Melam advised aspiring entrepreneurs.
She also highlighted the importance of staying updated with rapidly changing trends by communicating with different people and maintaining strong relationships with investors, partners, and stakeholders to ensure smooth business operations.
