Yangchen C Rinzin

Yangchen C Rinzin has always believed that journalism is more than a profession—it’s a public service. With nearly two decades of experience in the field, she is currently serving as a Researcher at the Centre for Bhutan and GNH Studies (CBS) under the command of the Gyalpoi Zimpon Office, a position she has held since 2021. Her transition from journalism to research was a natural evolution of her deep commitment to national service and meaningful storytelling.

Before joining CBS, she served as the Chief of the Bureau at Kuensel Corporation Limited, Bhutan’s first and only English daily newspaper, from 2020 to 2021. Her career with Kuensel spanned 15 impactful years, starting in 2010 as a young, determined reporter. Over time, she rose through the ranks to become a Senior Journalist and eventually the Chief of the Bureau—earning a reputation as one of Bhutan’s most respected and seasoned journalists.

A three-time recipient of Bhutan’s Journalism Award, Yangchen’s work consistently challenged the status quo and gave voice to the underserved. Her in-depth reporting on education reform, civil service restructuring, and rural development sparked critical national conversations. Half of her career was spent stationed in the eastern dzongkhags, where she covered six districts. There, she was affectionately called “Ai ga Kuensel madam”—a sign of the deep trust she earned from the local communities.

In recognition of her leadership and dedication, she was awarded His Majesty’s prestigious scholarship to attend the Young Professional Leadership Program at the Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies (RIGSS). The experience further enriched her understanding of governance and national development.
