Melam, a 27-year-old entrepreneur, achieved a remarkable feat today as she emerged as the winner of the prestigious Springboard Plus 2023 Award, securing a cash prize of Nu. 300,000/-. Her flourishing plant-nursery business, Kith-Tshel Garden, impressed the judges with its potential to contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Melam’s journey toward success began after she completed her bachelor’s degree in Media Studies from Sherubtse College in 2018. Inspired by her elder brother’s career as a forester, she developed a deep interest in plants and flowers from a young age. In 2019, she transformed her passion into a career opportunity and established a plant nursery in her own backyard in Thimphu.
Recognizing the importance of continuous learning, Melam actively sought out training opportunities in the field of floriculture and landscaping. In 2021, she participated in various training programs provided by the Department of Cottage and Small Industries, honing her skills and expanding her knowledge.
In January 2023, Melam’s dedication and entrepreneurial spirit led her to join the second cohort of the #SpringboardPlus Programe. Over the course of six months, she attended critical training sessions and online learning programs that focused on essential aspects of startup acceleration, such as product-market fit, e-commerce, crowdfunding, and gender inclusivity.
On May 31, 2023, Melam, alongside 18 other ambitious and existing entrepreneurs, had the opportunity to pitch their business scale-up plans. They showcased how their respective businesses could contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Melam’s presentation impressed the judges, highlighting her innovative ideas and commitment to making a positive impact.
Today, at the award ceremony of Springboard Plus 2023, Melam stood tall as she was announced the winner of the first prize. Her exceptional business model and the potential for growth and positive societal impact earned her the coveted cash prize of Nu. 300,000/-. With this grant support, Melam aims to expand her business by introducing a wider variety of plants, implementing a delivery system within Thimphu, employing additional staff members, and enhancing her branding efforts.
Celebrations filled the room as Melam’s success became an inspiration to other entrepreneurs. Nine other startups were also recognized for their innovative ideas and granted cash support ranging from Nu. 200,000 to Nu. 300,000. This financial boost will undoubtedly assist these entrepreneurs in expanding their startups and further contributing to Bhutan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Springboard Plus 2023 Award ceremony marked a significant milestone for Melam and the other winning entrepreneurs, as they embark on a new chapter of growth and impact. The event serves as a testament to the immense talent and potential that Bhutan’s entrepreneurial community possesses in driving sustainable development and creating a brighter future for the nation.
