Watermelon Festival: A Celebration of Rural Prosperity and Tradition
In Goling village, Zhemgang, farmers Thinley Zangmo and Leki Dorji begin their day at dawn, tending to their lush watermelon fields under the summer sun. With meticulous care, they cover the fields with hay, nurturing vibrant plants that promise a rich harvest.
Both around 40 years old, Thinley Zangmo and Leki Dorji expanded their cultivation last December, planting across an acre in anticipation of the upcoming Watermelon Festival organized by the Khengrig Namsum Cooperative. This festival, scheduled from June 7-9 at Thimphu’s Clock Tower, heralds a vibrant celebration of Zhemgang’s agricultural prowess and culinary heritage.
Thinley Zangmo’s dedication exemplifies her commitment to showcasing the region’s finest produce at this esteemed event. Her expanded acreage, from a few decimals previously, reflects her aspiration to contribute to the festival’s success and enhance her income potential. With six children to support, she is optimistic about earning more than last year’s impressive Nu 250,000.
Similarly, farmer Leki Dorji has doubled his cultivation to one acre, driven by the growing demand and ease of selling watermelons. Following the success in nearby Berti, watermelon cultivation has gained popularity in Goling village, with 60 households now cultivating across five acres.
Chairperson Thinley Wangdi of the Khengrig Namsum Cooperative affirms their readiness for the festival, timed to coincide with the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen’s birth anniversary. The cooperative, boasting 230 registered members, plays a pivotal role in supporting local farmers by providing seeds, farming tools, and purchasing watermelons to ensure quality.
Last year alone, the cooperative produced and distributed 60 metric tonnes of watermelon to hotels and schools, underscoring its role in enhancing market access and promoting Zhemgang’s agricultural bounty.
As preparations for the Watermelon Festival gain momentum, Thinley Zangmo, Leki Dorji, and their fellow farmers embody the spirit of rural entrepreneurship and community resilience. Their dedication not only promises a flavorful display of Zhemgang’s prized watermelons but also highlights the cooperative’s commitment to fostering prosperity and tradition in rural Bhutan.
With plans to establish the festival as an annual affair, the event stands as a testament to the cooperative’s vision for sustainable agricultural development and cultural celebration.
