An Enterprise for Sustainable Development
Ugyen, the founder of Bio Bhutan, has carved a unique niche in Bhutan’s entrepreneurial landscape by pioneering the production of natural and organic certified products. Established in 2005, Bio Bhutan exemplifies a business model deeply rooted in community collaboration and environmental sustainability. The company sources raw materials from rural communities, creating opportunities for local farmers and ensuring its products resonate with health-conscious and environmentally aware consumers.
Bio Bhutan began with seed funding provided by Coop, one of Switzerland’s largest retailers and organic wholesalers. This soft loan enabled the company to kick-start organic production in Bhutan, focusing on transforming locally available raw materials into high-quality products. Coop’s support not only laid the financial foundation for Bio Bhutan but also reinforced its commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices.
Bio Bhutan collaborates with over 600 households across 22 community groups, including women’s groups, community forest management groups, medicinal plant groups, and small-scale farmers. By purchasing raw materials such as lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, and medicinal herbs, the company provides these communities with a stable income while promoting sustainable harvesting practices. This model ensures the longevity of natural resources and enhances the livelihoods of rural populations.

One of the company’s standout achievements is the implementation of the Bhutan Access and Benefit
Sharing (ABS) System. This agreement guarantees that profits from products using local genetic resources are equitably shared with the communities involved. For instance, 7% of the revenue benefits 84 households in Dagala, while 25% contributes to the Bhutan Access and Benefit Sharing Funds. Such initiatives exemplify Bio Bhutan’s commitment to fair trade and community welfare.
Since its inception, Bio Bhutan has expanded its product line significantly, offering:
- Personal Care Products: Handmade natural bar soaps in four varieties.
- Essence and Fragrance: Pure essential oils from seven medicinal and aromatic plants, lemongrass-based air sprays, massage oils, and perfumes.
- Food Products: Spices, honey, mustard oil, herbal teas, and green teas.
- Semi-Processed Goods: Medicinal and aromatic herbs, including dried lemongrass, for export
These products are marketed across Bhutan in handicraft shops, domestic supermarkets, and high-end hotels. The flagship items—lemongrass essential oil and lemongrass oil-based air spray—have become popular among tourists, expatriates, and local consumers. They are also gaining popularity on local e-commerce platforms, expanding their reach.
Bio Bhutan’s organic products have gained international recognition, with exports to Germany, Switzerland, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and China. For instance, Bio Bhutan holds the EU Standard Certificate (EC 834/2007 & 889/2008) and the Swiss Farming Ordinance Certificate (SR 910.18), ensuring that products meet the highest organic and sustainable standards.
Domestically, Bio Bhutan has made significant strides in replacing imported toiletries with locally produced alternatives. Its natural bar soaps, for example, are now featured in luxury hotels like Zhiwa Ling, Six Senses, and Thimphu’s top city hotels. This shift not only promotes Bhutanese products but also reduces the country’s reliance on imports, contributing to economic self-sufficiency. One of Bio Bhutan’s most notable achievements is introducing Bhutan’s first organic label. This certification not only ensures product authenticity but also sets a benchmark for other businesses in the country. By leading the way in organic production, Bio Bhutan inspires other enterprises to adopt sustainable practices and prioritize environmental conservation.

Bio Bhutan aims to expand its presence across all 390 certified hotels and resorts in Bhutan, as recognized by the Tourism Council of Bhutan. The company plans to replace imported toiletries with locally produced alternatives, saving millions of dollars and providing guests with a more authentic Bhutanese experience. Beyond its current operations, Bio Bhutan aspires to become a sustainable green business model, encouraging communities to adopt environmentally friendly practices and inspiring other businesses to follow suit.
A prime example of Bio Bhutan’s transformative approach is its work with lemongrass. Before 2005, lemongrass was underutilized in Bhutan. However, through Bio Bhutan’s efforts, this fragrant herb has become synonymous with the country’s hospitality industry.
Hotels and resorts across Bhutan now welcome guests with the soothing scent of lemongrass essential oil and air sprays, creating memorable experiences while supporting local farmers who supply the raw material.
Bio Bhutan’s journey is a testament to the power of persistence, resilience, and passion—the three ingredients Ugyen believes are essential for entrepreneurial success. By fostering local production, the company not only substitutes imports but also builds capacity within the community. This entrepreneurial spirit helps develop local expertise and inspires others to pursue similar paths, ultimately strengthening Bhutan’s economy.

Despite its achievements, Bio Bhutan faces challenges such as limited production capacity and the need for ongoing quality improvements to meet international standards. These challenges, however, also present growth opportunities. By investing in advanced processing facilities and expanding its farmer network, Bio Bhutan can scale its operations and increase its impact.
Additionally, the global demand for natural and organic products continues to rise, providing Bio Bhutan with a promising market. By prioritizing sustainability and quality, Bio Bhutan is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for eco-friendly products, further cementing its reputation as an industry leader.
Bio Bhutan stands as a beacon of sustainable entrepreneurship in Bhutan. Through its innovative business model, the company not only delivers high-quality natural and organic products but also uplifts rural communities, conserves the environment, and promotes Bhutanese culture on a global stage. As Bio Bhutan continues to expand, it exemplifies how businesses can be a catalyst for positive change, generating a ripple effect that benefits society, the environment, and the economy.
With its unwavering commitment to its core values and a clear vision for the future, Bio Bhutan is more than just a company. It is a movement that inspires a sustainable and prosperous Bhutan.
